The Arizona chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America filed a lawsuit Wednesday to stop light-rail funding from going back to the ballot.
At the end of November, a group of light-rail opponents dubbed “Building a Better Phoenix” submitted 40,000 signatures, which if verified, would require Phoenix to hold an election to decide the fate of planned light rail expansions throughout the city.
If the initiative is approved by voters, the city would stop all future light-rail spending and divert the allocated funds to other transportation projects, such as street repairs and increased bus service.
But the contractors group believes Building a Better Phoenix misled voters and illegally collected signatures, according to its complaint. The groups asking a judge to prevent the initiative from appearing on the ballot.
