With retired NASA astronaut Mark Kelly officially running for Arizona’s U.S. Senate race in 2020, Democrats now have a compelling candidate for a race expected to be among the most competitive in the nation next year.
What is unclear is whether they will have more candidates.
Last week, Grant Woods, the former Republican Arizona attorney general, ruled out a run, at least as a Democrat.
Others may join Kelly in vying for the seat currently held by incumbent Sen. Martha McSally, R-Ariz.
Shortly after Kelly unveiled his candidacy on Twitter on Tuesday morning, Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., noted his own interest in the Senate race and made clear he would decide soon whether he plans to run.
“I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m looking seriously at running for the U.S. Senate in 2020, and that hasn’t changed. I’ll be making a final decision and announcement soon,” he said.
