A second downtown Phoenix grocery store? $231 million high rises to replace transit center

The open space that separates the Van Buren light rail platforms between Central and First avenues may soon be transformed into a $231 million, multi-tower development. 

The Phoenix City Council will vote April 3 on a proposal to replace the Phoenix Central Station transit center — which sits between Polk and Van Buren streets — with apartments, student housing, office space, retail, restaurants and a hotel. 

Currently, Central Station is mostly open space and covered seating areas used by people waiting for buses or light rail, which runs on both the east and west sides of the site. There is also a small office building where passengers can purchase bus passes.
