Environmentalists sue EPA for not monitoring air pollution in Pinal County

By Kevin Reagan | PinalCentral

Environmentalists filed a lawsuit in federal court on Tuesday, accusing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency of not enforcing air-quality standards in Pinal County.

The Center for Biological Diversity, a California-based nonprofit, is asking the courts to fault the EPA for violating the country’s Clean Air Act by not updating the public on pollution levels around Maricopa and Stanfield.

That area of Pinal County was deemed a “nonattainment” area for small particles of air pollution by the EPA in 2011. The federal agency had until June 2018 to notify the public whether this zone had attained better air quality.

In its lawsuit, the environmentalists claim the EPA missed this deadline and had violated federal rules and regulations.
