Former Tempe Councilman Corey Woods announced this week that he intends to challenge Mayor Mark Mitchell for the city’s top spot in next year’s election.
Woods served two terms on the City Council from 2008 to 2016 before opting not to run again due to self-imposed term limits.
Four years later, however, Woods said Tempe is at a pivotal place in its history.
“After about a year of a lot of introspection, I decided to run after consulting with friends and family and advisers,” he told The Arizona Republic. “I served eight years on the city council and really enjoyed my time there, but there is more that I think I could do in the mayor’s role.”
Woods filed a statement of organization with the city, one of the first steps to run for public office, in January. The election is in March 2020.
If elected, Woods would become the city’s first African-American mayor. Watch the video here:
