Parts of Tempe’s iconic Monti’s La Casa Vieja to be demolished

Portions of Monti’s La Casa Vieja in Tempe will be knocked down as crews restore the building to its original 1920s form.

Monti’s — a fixture on Mill Avenue that was the birthplace of Carl Hayden and then a popular steakhouse for nearly 60 years — has sat vacant since Monti’s closed in 2014.

The adobe structure, also known as Hayden House, is being restored to its 1924 form.

On Tuesday, Crews will begin the intricate work of removing and demolishing newer additions from the original portions of the home.
