Scottsdale is among seven U.S. cities recognized by Bloomberg Philanthropies for its use of data in decision-making, problem solving and to improve government transparency.
Bloomberg Philanthropies, the charitable arm of media mogul and former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, has designated Scottsdale in its 2019 What Works Cities Certification program.
Scottsdale is the only Western city to make the Bloomberg list which looks at how city governments leverage data.
Scottsdale has detailed information listed online on development proposals, capital improvement projects, procurement processes and municipal contracts.
The city also offers a One Stop Shop process for developers, builders and contractors submitting plans and getting permits from the city.
“The credit goes to the professional staff who work for the city,” said Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane in a statement. “Our executive leadership are accomplished and highly-regarded professionals who manage all the complexities that come with operating a city like Scottsdale and are committed to making data-driven decisions about services and programs. We strive to provide “Simply Better Service for our World Class Community” and it is wonderful that those efforts have earned this national recognition.”
Scottsdale joins Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Arlington, Texas, Louisville, Kentucky, Memphis and Kansas City, Missouri on the Bloomberg list.
“Data helps city leaders understand problems and measure success, and it helps citizens hold government accountable for meeting public needs on all the big challenges we face – from promoting health and safety to fighting climate change,” Michael Bloomberg said in a statement.
