Tempe is getting creative as it tackles its affordable housing problem. But is it enough?

Jack Fischer lived in a 34-year-old RV for nearly two years after his landlord raised the rate on his Tempe rental home in 2013.

The experience makes for quite a story now, but life in a 28-foot motor home wasn’t easy. “Everything in there is made to be used twice a year, not every day,” he said. 

Fischer eventually moved in with a friend, landed a higher-paying job and improved his credit score.

He bought his first home in Tempe just more than a year ago with help from the state’s HOME Plus Home Loan Program that helps with the down payment and closing costs.

But things are tight, Fischer said.
