Eurowings, a lower-cost arm of Lufthansa, will start new nonstop flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Frankfurt.
The services will start next April and run until November. Eurowings plans Phoenix to Frankfurt flights five days a week on 270-seat Airbus 330-200 planes.
The announcement buoys Sky Harbor’s efforts to bring international flights to Phoenix.
Eurowings currently offers flights between German cities and several U.S. destinations including New York, Miami and Las Vegas.
The airline also announced it would be launching new flights between Frankfurt and Anchorage, Alaska; Munich and Las Vegas and Munich and Orlando.
“We are thrilled to connect the Phoenix metropolitan area with Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub, where we offer over 200 connecting flights to cities across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Phoenix is one of the top growth areas in the Southwest, with a robust economy that has links to companies in Europe and beyond. The new Eurowings flights will definitely usher in a new era for both leisure and business travelers alike in Arizona and throughout the Lufthansa network,”
said Frank Naeve, vice president of sales, The Americas, Lufthansa Group.
Eurowings move comes after another German carrier Condor Airlines launched seasonal service between Phoenix and Frankfurt in 2018. Condor has expanded that service.
The city Phoenix, which owns and runs Sky Harbor, estimates international flights, including British Airways service between London and Phoenix, have a $3 billion annual economic and tourism impact on Arizona each year.
“Phoenix is a global city in every sense of the word. The success of our economy, our culture, and our future greatly depend upon our ability to successfully connect with urban centers around the world. Sky Harbor has already added three new international flights this year, an impressive testament to the many innovative and exciting things happening here in Phoenix,” said Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego.
