Valley media company adds California newspapers, magazines to portfolio

Times Media Group is growing again, this time through the purchase of a California media company, to mark its first expansion outside of Arizona.

Tempe-based Times Media Group bought Southland Publishing for an undisclosed price last week. With the Southland purchase comes five offices with five newsweeklies — the LA Downtown News, the Pasadena Weekly, the Argonaut, the VC Reporter and the San Diego City Beat — three monthly magazines and all the digital properties. The offices are in Los Angeles, Ventura County, Santa Monica, Pasadena and San Diego.

Steve Strickbine, president and founder of Times Media Group, said the papers fit with the company’s direction and offered a chance to grow outside its home market.
