Veteran who lost home over a few hundred dollars in back taxes sues Maricopa County

A month after county officials promised a disabled military veteran he could keep the home they mistakenly sold, Jim Boerner remains in limbo.

Now he’s suing to keep his home.

Jim Boerner lost his Mesa mobile home in June over a few hundred dollars in property taxes. Maricopa County admitted officials sold the home even though Boerner had paid back taxes a week before the auction deadline.

After The Arizona Republic reported Boerner’s story and it gained national attention, county officials announced they secured a “deal” to save the home. But they didn’t provide details, and Boerner has wondered for weeks if he would be kicked out.
