Gilbert Regional Park opens Saturday with a mountain-shaped playground, water play area and zipline for kids, among other amenities.
The park at 3005 E. Queen Creek Road is planned to eventually sprawl across 272 acres and be the town’s largest park. The first phase opening this weekend covers 30 acres.
Robert Carmona, director of Gilbert parks and recreation, called the opening of the south Gilbert park an important moment. “The community has been waiting a long time and we want to make sure we give them the best amenity possible.”
Saturday’s grand opening will begin with a “beach party” from 8 to 10 a.m., including a ceremonial countdown to turn on the splash pad led by Gilbert Mayor Jenn Daniels and the Town Council at 8:30. After a day of play, the park will close out with a glow party, laser light show and DJ from 6 to 9 p.m. There will also be giveaways from the parks department.
