Xcel Energy has selected longtime partner Mortenson to build the 500 MW Cheyenne Ridge Wind Project in Colorado.

Slated for completion in December 2020, the facility will represent the state’s second-largest single-phase wind project in the state. Vestas will be supplying V120 and V110 turbines for the wind farm, which will be sited in Cheyenne and Kit Carson counties.

Gerald Kelly, Xcel Energy project manager, notes that the company has worked “extensively” with Mortenson on other wind farms, such as the 600 MW Rush Creek Wind Project in Colorado.

Mortenson will self-perform all civil, foundation, turbine erection, collection and substation construction for Cheyenne Ridge.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Xcel Energy and Vestas and contribute toward Colorado’s energy transformation,” comments Tim Maag, vice president and general manager at Mortenson.

The new wind project aligns with Colorado Gov. Jared Polis’ recently announced road map for helping the state reach 100% renewable electricity by 2040.
