Goodyear looks at big land rezoning

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

The city of Goodyear is looking at a major rezoning of 2,283 acres to allow for more industrial and commercial uses and to create more open space.

The Goodyear City Council will consider zoning changes for Lakin Park Area south of MC 85 and north of the Gila River at its Monday meeting.

There are multiple landowners in the area including Lakin Cattle Company which owns 750 acres in the area and is looking to partner with Quantum Capital on potential new developments.

The large swath of land is now mostly zoned for residential use with 620 acres set for open space.

The changes being considered would allow for 685 areas of the Lakin Park land to be zoned for industrial use, another 297 acres would be zoned for other business and commercial uses and open spaces would increase to more than 1,000 acres.

Under current zoning only 41 acres is zoned for commercial use and none is zoned for industrial.

Goodyear has seen some significant gains with data centers, including a large Microsoft campus, as well as manufacturing led by a new planned Nike plant.
