Tempe Maker District gets approvals with hopes of new businesses, housing

Tempe is looking to make its mark in an older industrial area through zoning changes that allow for more mixed-use development, housing and new businesses.

The Tempe City Council has approved land-use changes in an area along Priest Drive, Broadway Road and Southern Avenue.

The area is also being branded the Tempe Maker District to help attract and new manufacturing and creative companies.

The Maker District is also part of a federal Opportunity Zone which over tax breaks for new real estate developments. The Tempe Council approved land-use changes that allow for new mixed-used and residential projects in the area which is now home to mostly older industrial buildings and warehouses.
