The city of Phoenix is moving forward with long-held plans to develop a new Latino Cultural Center.
The Phoenix City Council’s Subcommittee on Land Use and Livability has tentatively approved a city staff recommendation for the new Latino Center to be located at the North Building at Margaret T. Hance Park at the north end of downtown.
But Phoenix City Councilman Carlos Garcia and other councilors also want the city to leave the door open to another location that could spur economic development in south or west Phoenix.
Progress on the Latino Cultural Center now moves to the full Phoenix City Council.
The Council is also moving forward with issuing a Requests for Proposals to hire a capital campaign consultant to fundraise for the project.
City staff has recommended rehabilitating the currently vacant North Building at the park for the Latino Cultural Center. That city owned site was chosen over other potential locations by city staff.
