Trader Joe’s is looking to open a new location in north Tempe.

The national grocery chain submitted a liquor license application to the state last month for a location at Rural Road and University Drive.

A company spokeswoman said plans for a new store have not yet been confirmed but Trader Joe’s is eyeing expansion in the area.

“We are interested in bringing a Trader Joe’s store to Tempe and are taking the necessary steps to make that happen,” spokeswoman Kenya Friend-Daniel said.

The north Tempe location would be the company’s second store in the city. The company operates a Trader Joe’s about five miles south on Guadalupe Road and McClintock Drive.
