WHAT: Neighbors and community leaders are invited to Guerrero Rotary Park in Mesa to join together with talented local artists to create a series of breathtaking murals. The Urban Land Institute has chosen 12 prominent Arizona muralists to design and paint murals side-by-side with volunteers. No artistic experience is required of volunteers, and all ages are welcome. Painting participants will help these 12 artists enhance the Guerrero Park neighborhood with art and creativity. This family-friendly event will be a celebration everyone can enjoy with free food, music and artistic expression.
WHY: Urban Land Institute’s mission includes creating and sustaining thriving communities in Arizona and around the world. One of ULI’s initiatives is to use Creative Placemaking to help build strong, healthy cities by promoting the integration of arts and culture in community revitalization. The ULI 2D Community Mural Project is a community effort of creating additional artwork in the already artistic Mesa neighborhood, connecting the community and sharing the stories and histories of individuals in the area through art. The event will encourage artists and the Guerrero Park neighborhood to catalyze neighborhood revitalization through vibrant two-dimensional murals.
ULI chose this neighborhood because it is rich in culture and heritage and provides the opportunity to enhance a strong sense of community pride, creativity and the neighbors’ desire for mural arts.
