Right about this time a decade ago, Arizona’s economy hit rock bottom.
The Great Recession had sent the housing market — the foundation of the state’s economy — tumbling. People lost homes to rampant foreclosures. Banks failed. Businesses shuttered and workers were laid off in the public and private sectors.
“We were the only ones living on our block,” Avondale Mayor Kenn Weise remembers. “The neighborhood emptied out. They couldn’t afford the house so they walked away.”
