The Phoenix City Council has voted to move forward with development of a new Latino Cultural Center.
The council voted yesterday to designate the North Building at Margaret T. Hance Park as the preferred location for a new Latino Cultural Center.
The park is located north of downtown Phoenix off Central Avenue.
The City Council did leave the door open to other locations if they arise and can offer an economic development to south or west Phoenix.
The council also approved a measure instructing city staff to craft a request for proposals (RFP) for a capital campaign consultant to start raising money for development of the Latino Cultural Center.
Council members Laura Pastor and Michael Nowakowski both noted the lengthy process involving the Cultural Center.
“It was a unanimous vote for the Latino Cultural Center. There’s the possibility of the north building at Margaret T. Hance Park or another location. In addition, we voted for an RFP to select a capital campaign consultant to assist in the financial planning of the Latino Cultural Center,” Pastor said.
“The city of Phoenix’s Latino arts and culture community is rich, vibrant and ever-evolving. This center will be a home for more than just art. It will encompass storytelling, cultural foods, music, programs and festivals. Today’s vote is a vital step in the 18-year process to provide our City with the long-overdue Latino Cultural Center it deserves,” Pastor said.
