‘We are being pushed out’: What Whole Foods means for a historic neighborhood

Tempe might be best known as a college town filled with maroon-and-gold clad students, but at least one pocket within the city leaves a different impression. 

The neighborhood just west of Mill Avenue and south of University Drive — named Maple-Ash after the two main streets that run through it — is a community filled with historic houses, longtime Tempe residents and local businesses.

Residents ride bicycles down streets lined with bungalows that peek out between old-growth trees. Popular local spots border the area adjacent to Arizona State University, including the original location of Cartel Coffee, Casey Moore’s Oyster House and Otto Pizza and Pastry, which has been open for nearly three decades.
