102-year-old Edwards Hotel could reopen as Airbnb

Plans to turn Old Town Peoria’s dilapidated Edwards Hotel into a haunted vacation destination stalled for more than two years, but owner Dan Halbert hopes to finally have it up and running this September.

Halbert, former president of Phoenix-based Matrix Real Estate Investor Network, bought the now 102-year-old building in late 2017, saving it from the threat of demolition because of numerous city code violations. 

Progress since then has been slow. Halbert says that because other areas of his business demanded more attention, the project didn’t qualify for city funds that Halbert was counting on to help with renovations and the roof deteriorated, putting the total cost a half-million dollars steeper than he initially budgeted.
