Clean Elections seeks accounting of money spent on campaign website

By Andrew Nicla | Arizona Capitol Times

The Arizona Citizens Clean Election Commission wants to know what happened to the voter-approved money it gave the Secretary of State’s Office for its See the Money campaign finance website.

Since the two entered into an agreement on how to spend it, staff from both offices meet regularly, but members of the commission said the Secretary of State’s Office has not told them where the money was spent and whether the terms of the contract have been fulfilled.

Commission Executive Director Tom Collins said in a December 12 public meeting he came away from a meeting in November with the secretary of State staff with the impression the agreement signed with the previous administration is void.

The commission unanimously voted on December 12 to authorize staff to work with its lawyers and the Secretary of State’s Office to assess the status of the contract and, if necessary, take action to ensure compliance. Collins said he has been in contact with Secretary of State Katie Hobbs’ staff and plans to meet with them during the week of January 6, before the commission’s next meeting this month.
