Avondale crafting plan to attract development, preserve history

By Joshua Bowling | The Republic

Avondale leaders are crafting a plan they say will preserve the history of the fast-growing suburb southwest of Phoenix while attracting new housing and retail shops.

The City Council discussed the plan in December and could take it to a vote this summer. The plan draws inspiration from downtown Gilbert and downtown Chandler, both areas that have preserved nearby historic neighborhoods while attracting trendy restaurants and shops.

The plan targets three areas south of Interstate 10:

  • Historic Avondale, from Litchfield Road to the Agua Fria River and from Van Buren Street down to Lower Buckeye Road.
  • Las Ligas/Rio Vista, from the Agua Fria River to Fairway Drive at Lower Buckeye Road.
  • Cashion, from roughly Avondale Boulevard to 107th Avenue, just south of Buckeye Road.
