Phoenix passes Boston as 10th largest U.S. metro area

Phoenix now ranks as the 10th largest metropolitan area in the U.S. moving ahead of Boston, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Phoenix metro area has a current population of 4,948,203, according to the Census. The ranks ahead of Boston (11th) and behind Atlanta (9th) among the most populous metro areas. New York tops the list with a metro population of 19.2 million followed by Los Angeles at 13.2 million, according to the new Census data.

Maricopa County added the most new residents of any U.S. county between 2010 and 2019 with 668,049 new residents. The Phoenix metro area ranks third in terms of regional growth between 2010 and 2019 adding 775,074 new residents. That is behind only Dallas and Houston.
