The U.S. Senate failed to advance the $1.6 trillion coronavirus aid package during a rare Sunday vote that came after days of negotiations among leaders from both parties, with Arizona’s senators split.

The Republican-controlled Senate needed 60 votes to move forward with the “Phase 3” coronavirus financial package. The Senate failed to clear the hurdle with a 47-47 vote.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., voted no on the motion and issued a written statement explaining her stance.

“Lives are at stake,” Sinema said. “We need a strong, bipartisan package that will quickly pass the Senate and House and immediately help in the fight against Covid-19. We only just received this bill and it will not pass the House. There is no time for partisan games.”

Sen. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., voted yes on the motion.
