Phoenix mayor supports new White House criteria for reopening economy

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego on Friday issued a statement in response to the new guidelines released by the White House for restarting the economy, urging governments to expand assistance to that sector of the economy.

The White House released the guidelines as frustration mounts among many small business owners in the Valley and around the country as funding to keep their doors open remains difficult to find or negotiate. Meanwhile, protests have begun in some states pressing governors to quickly reopen their economies despite the increasing number of coronavirus cases and deaths in the country.

In Arizona, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 continues to rise. As of Saturday, the Arizona Department of Health Services said there are now 4,719 confirmed cases, with the number of deaths now at 177. Nearly 2,500 of those cases are in Maricopa County.
