After decades of national accolades as one of the biggest affordable meccas in the country, Phoenix officially has an affordable housing problem.
Phoenix is short 163,000 housing units. And of those who have found housing, 65% can’t afford the house they’re in, according to a recent analysis of Phoenix’s housing stock and income levels.
The city is trying to quickly build housing that is affordable to people who make less than the median household income of about $55,000 — and experts say their efforts can’t materialize soon enough.
