Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) is adding 3,000 new jobs and 11 new sites across the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Amazon announced the expansion today and the new jobs are on top of the company’s 500-worker expansion of a technology hub in downtown Tempe.
The new sites include new delivery stations and fulfillment support centers.
One of the delivery stations will be at 150,000-square-foot-center at Falcon Field in Mesa near Boeing’s manufacturing facility.
“Many of us rely on Amazon’s delivery service and now our residents will receive their packages faster than ever,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said. “I’m proud that Mesa now has three of the Big Four tech companies in our city with Amazon joining Apple and Google.”
Amazon is also slated to open a 600,000-square-foot distribution facility in Phoenix by the end of the year. That center will create 1,000 full-time jobs.
Amazon is also building a new 855,000-square-foot fulfillment center in Goodyear. It is also slated to open by the end of year with 1,000 new jobs.
The e-commerce giant already a significant distribution footprint in metro Phoenix with existing centers in Goodyear and Phoenix.
“We’re proud to be growing in the Phoenix metro area, where we opened our first fulfillment center in the state more than 13 years ago with just 300 full-time employees. We now have more than 17,500 full- and part-time Amazon employees who call Arizona home,” said Matthew High, regional director, Amazon Fulfillment. “We greatly appreciate the strong, long-standing support we’ve received from local and state leaders as we continue to grow. We’re excited to create 3,000 new full- and part-time jobs across the Valley, with industry leading pay and comprehensive benefits starting on day one.”
Metro Phoenix and Tucson missed out on Amazon’s second headquarters (HQ2) sweepstakes in 2018.
But Amazon has steadily continued to grow its Arizona footprint.
“This is big news, not only for the Phoenix area, but for the entire state of Arizona,” said Governor Doug Ducey. “Amazon employs thousands of people in our state, and the company’s decision to expand their operations here will create thousands more job opportunities for our citizens. We are grateful for Amazon’s continued investment in Arizona.”
Amazon is also slated to open a new cross-dock facility in Surprise and a new delivery station in Surprise in 2021.
“We’re grateful Amazon continues to intentionally invest in Greater Phoenix and creates an abundance of job opportunities for residents at a critical juncture,” said Chris Camacho, president and CEO, Greater Phoenix Economic Council.
