The more rancorous debates around reopening schools in Arizona aren’t happening in areas with high concentrations of low-income students.
Four days into the new school year, students at Griffith Elementary were already familiar with the COVID-19 rituals.
As they walked into school, the nurse aimed a digital thermometer at their head. When the device registered their temperature, the students crossed the school’s front gate and headed to class, one by one, wearing masks.
“A lot of our kids are really excited to be back,” principal Robert Holmes said. “Some of them are really nervous. This is the first time they’ve been out of their house.”
