Phoenix buying property to help homeless veterans

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Laws Group Reporter

The city of Phoenix is allocating $10.5 million to buy a property at  12027 N. 28th Drive near Interstate 17 and Cactus Road.

The deal also involves leasing the property — a former motel — for housing for homeless and at-risk veterans.

The city is striking the lease and operational aspects of the deal with U.S. Vets. The group helps homeless veterans.

U.S. Vets will also have a future option to buy the property from the city.

The homeless services group is also getting a $500,000 grant from the city for the Phoenix center.

The problem of homelessness — including among veterans – has been magnified during the coronavirus pandemic with all its impacts on jobs and income.

U.S. Vets operates services for veterans including those facing homelessness and housing issues in 13 U.S. cities.

The Phoenix City Council approved moving forward with the city’s purchase of the property earlier this month.
