Industrial trumps townhomes, Apache Junction P&Z decides

The Apache Junction City Council should not approve a rezoning and minor general plan amendment to allow a subdivision of 107 two- and three-story townhomes, the planning and zoning commission decided recently.

The land previously used as a golf driving range is on the south side of Old West Highway, east of Royal Palm Road and west of Tomahawk Road.

The commission voted 3-4 on rezoning 7.93 acres from business park to high-density multiple-family detached residential by planned development and a minor general plan amendment from light industrial/business park to high density residential. Dissenting were Chairman Peter Heck and Commissioners Darryl Cross, Dirk Begeman and Robin Barker.
