Opinion: An effort in the Arizona House to undermine face mask directives is the wrong remedy at the wrong time.
Editorial boardArizona Republic
Republican leaders in Sunbelt states are in a hurry to get rid of face masks as COVID-19 vaccine distribution merges with natural immunity to start pushing down transmission rates.
In Arizona, Joseph Chaplik, a Scottsdale Republican, has introduced House Bill 2770 that would give businesses the option of ignoring mask mandates.
He calls it a matter of “freedom and liberties.”
Chaplik’s bill passed the House on a 31-28 party-line vote, with Democrats opposing.
There will no doubt come a time when this pandemic is behind us and face masks no longer make sense, but that time is not now.
