OPINION: Legislators vote to give themselves a big pay raise and block voters from stopping it

House Bill 2053 would raise the per-diem pay of Maricopa County legislators from $35 to $56 a day.

Arizona’s legislators took a break last week from devising new and ever-more creative ways of making it more difficult to vote and turned instead to giving themselves a pay raise.

Not only did they introduce the plan in a sneaky way – bypassing the regular process so as to minimize the need for public hearings – they declared that it’s an emergency that we put more money into their pockets.

This, so that we mere voters have no ability to mount a referendum to stop them.

Yes, it’s April 1, but sadly, incredibly, this is no joke.
