Marco López and Kimberly Yee are running for governor of Arizona
For the first time, a Mexican immigrant and an Asian American have a real shot at winning Arizona’s governor race next year.
How they began their respective bids to win the minds and hearts of this traditionally conservative-leaning state are sharply different in style, substance and ideology.
Marco López, a business entrepreneur and the former mayor of Nogales, was first to officially enter the governor’s race, seeking the Democratic nomination to replace outgoing Gov. Doug Ducey in 2022.
On May 17, Arizona state Treasurer Kimberly Yee was second to announce her candidacy and the first one to seek the Republican nomination. Karrin Taylor Robson followed the same day in what’s expected to be a crowded field of GOP contenders.
