Arizona’s GOP U.S. House delegation largely stayed quiet publicly about the ouster of Rep. Liz Cheney from a leadership post. But some high-profile Arizona Republicans did speak up for her.

Cindy McCain, the widow of former Republican U.S. Sen. John McCain, and former U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., rebuked their party for voting to remove Cheney from her position as House Republican Conference chair.

Cheney, Wyoming’s lone member of Congress, was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump and continues to challenge him on his baseless claims about the 2020 presidential election results and his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“Today, @RepLizCheney chose truth over lies,” McCain tweeted Wednesday morning. “She chose country over party. She chose a cause greater than herself. She chose democracy. Thank you, Liz, for your courage.”

Flake seconded McCain, writing on Twitter, “Liz Cheney has been removed from House Leadership for speaking the truth. In the end, truth will prevail.”
