After more than a decade of retail losses to other booming cities in the West Valley, Laveen will soon receive a major upgrade.
At Wednesday’s Phoenix City Council Workforce and Economic Development Subcommittee meeting, several council members approved a motion to enter into a development agreement with Kitchell to build a major retail attraction along 59th Avenue and Baseline Road in Laveen.
“We’ve talked to people in Laveen and Estrella and those neighborhoods, and they often say ‘We want a major commercial center,’” said Eric J. Toll, a spokesman for the city of Phoenix Community and Economic Development. “They have satellite centers with grocery stores but they just didn’t have a major attraction.”
