Tempe is gearing up for a competitive City Council election in March.
Multi-term Tempe Councilmembers Robin Arredondo-Savage and Lauren Kuby won’t seek reelection, which has the city gearing up for a competitive City Council race that will bring at least two new people to public office.
Eight candidates, so far, are collecting signatures to run for three open seats.
The primary election will be held March 8 and the general election is scheduled for May 17, if needed. New councilmembers will be sworn in at the beginning of July.
The only incumbent in the race is Jennifer Adams, who is running for a second term.
The deadline to file signatures is Nov. 8. Candidates must collect 600 more signatures than in the last two elections because it’s based on past voter turnout, in this case a competitive mayoral race in March 2020.
That could make qualifying for the ballot more difficult as COVID-19 continues to affect door-to-door campaigning and in-person fundraising events. The council is expected to consider lowering the signatures needed at an upcoming meeting.
Here’s a look at the race.
