The shrill of referee whistles and the crunch of grass under cleats will soon be heard from a long-farmed parcel of land that has been vacant for years.
Construction of an $8.6 million multiuse soccer and sports fields complex at 2228 N. Center St. in Mesa is to start this summer.
The voter-approved project will be a benefit for the community, Councilmember Mark Freeman, District 1, said.
“I have seen this land used for agriculture for many decades. It is no longer farmed and has sat vacant for many years. The development of the park will add much-needed public green space for the community to use,” he said. “Before the sports fields, Mesa received other high-density and industrial project proposals for the parcel that would have had a much more significant impact on the character, quality of life and traffic in the area.”
