2 shuttered Kmarts, 2 opportunities for Phoenix area’s 2 biggest cities

Two shuttered Kmart buildings in metro Phoenix’s two largest cities could soon see new life.

Phoenix leaders in June approved plans to turn the former Kmart near Interstate 17 and Northern Avenue into a community hub. Developers in Mesa are in the early stages of a plan to knock down an old Kmart off Hampton and Clearview avenues in far east Mesa and replace it with nearly 400 apartments.

Phoenix leaders hope to have an announcement by the end of the year, according to the city’s Community and Economic Development Department.

The Mesa City Council in October approved a rezoning that could pave the way for the east Mesa apartments.
