Buckeye’s mayor says he wants to diversify housing options to meet residents’ needs, but the homebuilding track record there tells a far different story.
Buckeye, the fastest-growing city in the nation, saw not a single multi-family housing unit built in the past decade.
The city southwest of Phoenix had 14,000 single-family homes constructed between 2010 and 2020 but no apartments, according to the Maricopa Association of Governments.
Multi-family housing is typically housing in which owners share walls, like an apartment, townhouse or condo.
In neighboring Surprise, 5% of the 8,800 homes built in the past decade were multifamily, while 10% of the 12,000 homes that went up in Goodyear were multifamily units, the MAG data shows.
