State Sen. Martín Quezada, an attorney who represents Phoenix and Glendale in the Arizona Legislature, has announced he is running for Arizona treasurer.
He’s the first Democratic candidate to enter the 2022 race for that position.
While he has served as a member of the Arizona Legislature since 2012, Quezada said the treasurer’s office requires more than just legislative capabilities — it relies on administrative leadership.
“It’s less of a political role and it’s more of an administrative role,” Quezada said. “You need somebody who’s going to set a vision for the office and put the right people in the right places to administer the office efficiently and fairly.”
Quezada was a member of the House of Representatives for Arizona’s 29th Legislative District for two years before he was elected to the Arizona Senate in 2014. He is term limited out of that position after next year.
During his time in the Senate, he said he focused his efforts on “fighting against policies that harmed state employees, advocating for Medicaid expansion and being a steward of taxpayer dollars.”
