Intel Corp. — which has a large and expanding footprint in the East Valley — is building two new semiconductors factories in Ohio.
Intel’s $20 billion investment will help boost production of computer chips as the industry is challenged by shortages. California-based Intel has also been expanding its footprint in Arizona announcing last year a $20 billion expansion in Chandler.
The Ohio chip factories will be located in Licking County east of Columbus. The investment will create 7,000 construction jobs and 3,000 jobs at the facilities, Intel announced Friday.
The semiconductor company also pledged $100 million to work with educational institutions on workforce pipelines and research and development (R&D).
“Today’s announcement is monumental news for the state of Ohio,” said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. “Intel’s new facilities will be transformative for our state, creating thousands of good-paying jobs in Ohio manufacturing strategically vital semiconductors, often called ‘chips.’ Advanced manufacturing, research and development, and talent are part of Ohio’s DNA, and we are proud that chips – which power the future – will be made in Ohio, by Ohioans.”
The plants will be built on currently vacant land.
