Board approves controversial Republic Services transfer station in Peoria area

By Philip Haldiman | Your Valley

Ending a long battle with residents, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved the WestWing Transfer and Recycling Station, Feb. 23.

The controversial facility, located in the north Peoria area on a 10-acre parcel adjacent to the WestWing Power Station, was approved unanimously, including a yes vote from Supervisor Clint Hickman, who represents the area where the facility is to be built.

He said the location for the Republic Services facility is a good fit for the area — it is up against Loop 303, separated by a large ribbon of noise with drivers ripping past, bringing freight as well as people getting to and from work.

“I want to tell the community I’ve never made a statement against industrial, I’m not. That’s what is going to drive this county forward. But I am against bad industrial,” Hickman said.
