The Goodyear City Council will interview five finalists next week to fill a council vacancy.
The vacancy comes as Councilmember Joe Pizzillo was appointed mayor to finish the term of Georgia Lord, who died in December.
Goodyear is a city of about 100,000 residents in the southwest region of metro Phoenix that has heavily focused on growing its employment base along with its population. Goodyear is the ninth fastest growing city in country, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The council recently met in executive session to narrow the pool of 23 applicants to five finalists. The council also expects to conduct its interviews of the finalists on Feb. 22 in a closed-door session.
The council could enter open session to vote on an appointment or wait until its Feb. 28 meeting.
The new council member could be sworn in Feb. 28 or March 7, a city spokesperson said.
