Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel

The State Bar of Arizona is investigating Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel over allegations she conducted business while impaired and was physically absent for weeks.
The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is looking into concerns raised by her staff, who say they have lost confidence in her ability to lead the third largest prosecutorial office in the country.
A little-known grand jury process also could come into play in the tense situation, in which five top prosecutors called for an investigation and urged Adel to resign.
The State Bar confirmed Thursday to The Arizona Republic it is looking into the misconduct allegations.
“The State Bar received that letter and is now investigating,” State Bar spokesperson Carol Rose said in a statement. “Because matters under investigation are confidential … we can’t provide any further information or answer questions specifically about the allegations in this case.”
The Board of Supervisors is expected to meet with an outside lawyer in executive session Tuesday to determine what — if any — authority it has over Adel, who holds an elected office.
