The Tempe City Council will hear a presentation at its Feb. 10 meeting on adding “climate justice” measures and policies to its climate change action plan.
Emma Viera, executive director of Unlimited Potential, (a Phoenix-based environmental justice and advocacy group), will talk about climate justice initiatives.
Tempe could add more language related to preserving cultures, acknowledging the impacts of colonialism and American history and concern land-back initiatives.
The latter involves giving indigenous communities more say over land-use (including over lands they previously held) with a focus on sustainable agriculture, affordable housing and cultural preservation.
The climate justice effort could also include a greater focus on preserving green spaces, planting more native and desert plans and promoting regenerative farming and citywide composting.
Other policy proposals include greater accessibility to solar energy for lower-income residents and building smaller housing units to help house homeless persons.
