What Arizona’s congressional delegation is saying about tensions in Russia and Ukraine

By Cami Parrish | Arizona Republic

Members of Congress and the public are viewing with alarm the intensifying tensions on the Russia-Ukraine border.

Here’s what Arizona’s congressional delegation says the United States should do about a possible Russian invasion.

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz.

In a written statement to The Arizona Republic, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., said she is “deeply concerned” by Russia’s military positioning on Ukraine’s border, and that her “highest priority” is the safety and security of Arizonans and servicemembers.

“I strongly support legislation providing Ukraine with the necessary tools to defend itself,” Sinema said.

Sinema went on to say that she remains in close contact with officials at the Department of Defense and at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson and will continue to work to ensure that Americans and servicemembers are safe.

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz.

Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., did not provide a comment to The Republic, but he was an original co-sponsor of the Defending Ukraine Sovereignty Act, which would put sanctions on Russia and provide security aid to Ukraine. Kelly also was one of six Democrats who in January sided with Republicans on a bill to put sanctions on “entities,” and the corporate officers of such entities, responsible for the planning, construction or operation of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline between Russia and Germany. The bill did not clear the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold and failed 55-44.

Kelly recently has been involved in classified Senate briefings, including one on Feb. 3 where he got an update on Ukraine.
