Why Sen. Mark Kelly’s idea to temporarily suspend the gas tax won’t work

Opinion: Sen. Mark Kelly wants to temporarily suspend a gas tax while touting an unnecessary handout for EV charging stations. There’s a reason we have this sort of thinking.

U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly proposes to suspend the federal gas tax, 18.4 cents a gallon, for the remainder of the year.

This is obviously a political flinch. Kelly is up for election this year. Inflation is a serious problem for the prospects of Democrats. And gas prices are particularly politically sensitive.

So, this would modestly reduce gas prices while Kelly is on the ballot. But it would do nothing to address excessive monetary and fiscal stimulus, which is what is fueling inflation.

Nor supply-chain issues, which exacerbate it for some commodities. Nor reverse the anti-fossil fuel policies of the Biden administration, which are also contributing to higher gasoline prices.

In an amusing irony, at about the same time Kelly put out a press release with Sen. Kyrsten Sinema bragging about $11 million the state got from the initial distribution of a $5 billion pot in Sinema’s infrastructure bill for electric vehicle charging stations along federal highways.
