Apartments planned at closed north Phoenix Harkins

A developer plans to redevelop a closed Harkins movie theater in north Phoenix into an apartment complex.

Harkins North Valley 16, at the northwest corner of Bell Road and 34th Way, just west of State Route 51, permanently closed its doors in January after 21 years in business. Scottsdale-based developer Wolff Co. plans to build a 278-unit apartment complex on the 12.9-acre site.

City staff approved preliminary site plans for the development Thursday.

According to a site plan submitted to the city of Phoenix, there will be 15 residential buildings on the property, 12 of which will be three stories and two of which will be two stories. There will also be a one-story clubhouse in the middle of the site. The three-story buildings will be capped at 37 feet in height.
